Retirement savings goal

How much capital do you need for the retirement income you want, and how much should you save each month to get there?

For anyone who wants to turn “I want something for retirement” into a specific amount and a monthly plan. The sooner you do it, the smaller the monthly effort.

You will need your age, when you want the capital to be available, how much monthly income you would like in today’s money and for how many years, and what you have already saved or save each month. If you know your expected Social Insurance old-age pension, enter it: it reduces the capital needed. Returns and inflation are assumptions you can change.

How to read the result

The main result is the monthly saving needed from today until retirement. To get there, the tool:

  • takes your Social Insurance pension off the income you want, leaving the top-up income;
  • raises it with inflation up to your first month of retirement;
  • works out the capital that pays this income, rising with inflation, for the years you chose, using the (usually more cautious) return during retirement;
  • compares it with what your current plan would build up.

You also see how much extra per month is needed compared with today and what share of the target your current plan covers. If retirement is more than 5 years away, the tool also shows how much the monthly effort would rise if you started 5 years later. If your retirement age is not above your current age, the capital missing today is shown instead.

What you can do next

If you are signed in, you can save the result to My reports and, only if you choose to, send it to your advisor; nothing is shared automatically.

The result is an estimate, not investment or pension advice. Returns are not guaranteed; taxes, fees and market swings are not considered. The Social Insurance pension is your own figure in today’s money; the tool does not calculate it.
