Medical insurance: time, choice and peace of mind

Private medical insurance is not only about cost. It is about time, choice, access and calm at the moment your family needs them.

When health cannot wait

When a serious health problem strikes, a family needs access, choices and a clear picture. It is not the moment to be reading policy terms or finding out which doctor works with which hospital.

Medical insurance can help in four ways: how quickly you are treated, your choice of hospital or doctor, costs you had not planned for, and the reassurance that there is a plan.

Alongside GESY, not instead of it

In Cyprus, employees and pensioners pay 2.65% and the self-employed 4% of their income towards GESY, the General Healthcare System. GESY is the foundation: it gives access to a personal doctor, specialists, tests, medicines and hospital care within the system.

Private cover works on top of it. Depending on the plan, it may pay for treatment outside GESY, your choice of doctor and hospital, treatment abroad, a daily hospital cash benefit or costs the system does not cover. Not every plan is the same. That is why it is worth checking properly what is covered, where, on what terms and at what cost.

Some plans are designed to complement GESY, while others cover private care more fully. The difference shows in the premium and the terms, so it is worth knowing which kind you have.

What you do in the first hour

In practice, readiness also means something very simple: knowing what to do in the first hour. Whom you call for pre-approval, which documents are needed, and whether you pay and claim back or the hospital deals with the insurer directly. When you know this in advance, the family can focus on what matters.

What to check in a plan

  • Cover limit. The maximum per year or per claim, and whether it is enough for a serious hospital stay.
  • Excess and co-payment. How much you pay yourself before or during a claim.
  • Network. Which hospitals and doctors deal directly with the insurer.
  • Abroad. Whether treatment outside Cyprus is covered, and on what terms.
  • Pre-existing conditions and waiting periods. What is excluded, and for how long.
  • Renewal. What happens to the premium and the cover as you get older.

Why it matters to you

Health is not just a premium. It is access and readiness at a time when the family has no room for chaos. A plan you chose calmly, knowing what it covers, is worth far more than one you discover on the day of a hospital admission.

Timing matters too. Medical cover is bought while you are healthy. After a diagnosis, a new application may come with exclusions or may not be accepted at all.

What you can do now

  • Find your plan’s table of benefits and note the limit, the excess and the network.
  • Save your policy number and the insurer’s helpline number on your phone.
  • Check that every family member is covered, and on what terms for the children.
  • Take the medical readiness check to see where you stand today.
  • If anything is unclear, get in touch before your renewal, not after.
